THE STORY

Paul Lamaure worked in a bank in Cognac before meeting Denise. In 1941, the couple married and he began working with his wife and her parents on their property in Julienne. Three generations of her ancestors had transmitted five hectares of vines and a four hectoliter potstill to them which would grow to twenty hectares in Petite Champagne and Fins Bois under Paul’s leadership.

During the Second World War, Paul continued to supply one of the big houses as his father-in-law had done for many years, but in 1947, he decided to bottle his own cognac and pineau independently under his new brand, “La Grange du Bois”, the place name of their house. He stocked his first cognac then, some of which was just sold this year, in 2020.

Seventy percent of this blend comes from demi-johns exclusively containing cognacs from the third year he put aside eaux-de-vie. It was distilled in the 4hl wood and charcoal-burning, nineteenth century potstill that remains on the property today. Unblended, they remained in barrels in an old, humid cellar for over six decades before being placed in glass. Elisabeth, Paul and Denise’s second daughter, found them in 2011, but they were under 40% alcohol by then. She set to blending them to perfection. The remaining 30% is from the early 80s, when she had returned to work on the property.

By the strength of his character and the beauty of his eaux-de-vie, Paul was able to build his name brand with many avid connoisseurs from all over France. When Elisabeth joined him, in 1982, she brought her love of travel, and thus export markets with her. Supported in his endeavors by his wife, Denise, and his children, Philippe and Elisabeth, Paul continued to grow his vineyards and his renown.

Over the years, Paul acquired fifteen more hectares and another twenty hectoliter potstill. Through the years, he continued using the accounting skills he had acquired as a young man to keep his accounts and stocks of eaux-de-vie in order until his 85th year, when he passed away in 1997. A portion of the vineyards was sold then, but Elisabeth continued to welcome people from far and wide to her cellars. She kept her share of the vineyards as well as cognac stocks until today, but with no one to take over now, the last of La Grange du Bois cognacs are contained in these bottles.

Le Cognac de Paul was bottled on October 2, 2020 in 180 numbered bottles.
